Family Research Institute

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Family Research Institute ( FRI ), formerly known as the Institute for the Scientific Investigation of Sexuality ( ISIS ), is an American evangelical religious organization. It is a non-profit organization based in Colorado Springs, Colorado .

aims

The self-declared mission is "... to generate empirical research on issues that threaten the traditional family, particularly homosexuality, AIDS, sexual social policy, and drug abuse" (... to promote empirical research on issues that threaten the traditional family. Threats are especially homosexuality, AIDS, sexual social policy and substance abuse). The FRI is part of the Christian Right , which tries to influence the political debate in the USA. In its own words, the FRI strives to "... to restore a world where marriage is upheld and honored, where children are nurtured and protected, and where homosexuality is not taught and accepted, but instead is discouraged and rejected at every level." (To maintain a world where marriage is upheld and honored, where children are nurtured and protected, and where homosexuality is neither taught nor accepted, but rejected on every level). The Boston Globe reported that the FRI's 2005 budget was less than $ 200,000.

The FRI is headed by psychologist Paul Cameron . He had studied at the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1966. Cameron founded the Institute for the Scientific Investigation of Sexuality (ISIS) in 1982. This later became the FRI.

history

In 1984, the Nebraska Psychological Association distanced itself from the works and claims of Dr. Paul Camerons.

In 1986 the American Sociological Association (ASA) rejected Cameron's work, particularly with regard to sociology. The FRI and its research have been cited by several organizations: American Family Association , Coral Ridge Ministries , Concerned Women for America , Americans for Truth About Homosexuality . The Illinois Family Institute quoted the FRI but has given it up.

Judgment as a hate group by the SPLC

The Family Research Institute has been classified as a homophobic hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center . The reason given was Cameron's research, which is under great criticism from a scientific point of view. The SPLC accused the FRI of continuing demonization of the LGBT community.
