Professor Paul Cameron

Paul Cameron (born November 9, 1939 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is a controversial American psychologist .

Life

Cameron received his Bachelor of Arts from Los Angeles Pacific College in 1961, his Masters of Arts from California State University in Los Angeles the following year, and his Ph. D. from the University of Colorado in 1966 . He then worked as a scientist at Wayne State University (1967/68), the University of Louisville (1970-73), the Fuller Graduate School of Psychology (1976-79) and the University of Nebraska (1979/80).

In 1983, Cameron was expelled from the American Psychological Association for violating the association's code of ethics with his publication of the 1983 ISIS Survey claiming that the thesis that homosexuals are perverse and criminal was proven. In 1985 and 1986 the American Sociological Association passed resolutions alleging that Cameron had consistently misrepresented sociological research. According to Cameron, these complaints stem from "political differences of opinion".

He currently chairs the Family Research Institute in Colorado Springs , which welcomes those who join “in the struggle to restore a world where marriage is upheld and honored, where children are raised and protected, and where homosexuality is not taught and accepted but instead is discouraged and rejected at every level. "

This institute was classified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center in 2005 . Cameron's research is highly controversial as he links homosexuality to AIDS, pedophilia, and health problems. While his research has received a lot of criticism, and there is no general agreement from other psychologists that they are methodologically sound, they are sometimes cited by groups as support against same-sex marriage and against the right to foster care and adoption of children by same-sex cohabitants .

On October 26, 2007, Cameron gave a lecture in London at an event organized by the Christian Council of Britain (CCB), a support organization of the right-wing British National Party (BNP), as part of a series of events organized by the CCB on the subject of “Morals and Values”. In June 2008 Cameron stayed in Moscow, where he a. a. met with representatives of the Sociological Institute of Moscow State University, which has come under criticism for anti-Semitic statements and low content , and supported the hostile attitude of Moscow Mayor Yuri Mikhailovich Luzhkov to Moscow Pride .

criticism

The American Psychological Association had already excluded Cameron from its organization in 1983. In 1984 the Nebraska Psychological Association distanced itself from Paul Cameron's interpretations. In 1996, the Board of Directors of the Canadian Psychological Association distanced itself from his works.

Judicial expert

Paul Cameron said in 1985 in the Baker v. Calf out. His statement that "homosexuals are proportionally more likely than heterosexuals to abuse children" has been challenged by Buchmeyer, a judge on the US District Court in Dallas. In his reasons for the judgment he found: “Dr. Paul Cameron himself [...] presented misrepresentations to this court ”as well as:“ It has here, apart from Dr. Cameron, no fraud or misrepresentation given "

In 2005, Paul Cameron was the primary expert on the Virginia State Parliament committee dealing with the Virginia Anti-Gay Adoption Bill , a failed bill that would have banned lesbian and gay child adoption. He claimed that gays, drug users and prostitutes “disrupt society” and have a much shorter life expectancy. He claimed it was scientifically proven that the average life expectancy of homosexuals is 42 years. The method of his study, published in 1994, was criticized for using data from a convenience sample (convenient sample that every person uses who is available and therefore not representative). The study used obituaries in gay newspapers as sources and spread them to the general population. This happened at the height of the AIDS epidemic, before reliable drugs were available.
