History and structure

Work on the lantern in October 2018

The lighthouse is a 15 m high, brick round tower with a double gallery and lantern in gray metallic. The tower is unplastered up to the lower gallery, but painted white between the galleries. He stands on a platform with a one-story, U-shaped keeper's house, which is no longer inhabited, and an outbuilding.

The Far de Llebeig was inaugurated together with the Far de Tramuntana in 1910 . Since then, the lighthouses mark the two ends of the elongated island of Sa Dragonera and replace the Far de Na Pòpia , which stands on the highest point of the island and , at 363 m, had the highest fire height in Spain. However, it is precisely this height that often makes it invisible to ships in foggy weather. The Far de Llebeig was designed by Eusebi Estada and built from 1905 to 1910 for 136,185 pesetas . Thanks to innovative technology that allowed the optics to rotate quickly, it was able to emit flashes of light in significantly faster succession than its predecessor. It was also the first lighthouse in the Balearic Islands to use a kerosene lamp from the English company Chance Brothers , which later became very popular. Initially three lighthouse keepers shared the work, from the 1920s only two. In the 1960s the lighthouse was manned by a seamark technician and an assistant who stayed on the island for half a month and were then replaced by a couple who had meanwhile been on duty in the port of Port Andratx.

As part of the automation of the lighthouses on the small islands of the Balearic Islands, the tower was renovated from 1969 and the lighting system switched to acetylene . When the old optics with their heavy base were to be brought to the permanent exhibition of navigation marks in the Far de Portopí in 1985 , the 6th US fleet had to be asked for help, which took over the transport by helicopter .

In 2018, the port authority of the Balearic Islands commissioned repair work on the roof and in the interior of the lighthouse. The lighting system is also to be replaced.
