Farm River State Park is a state park in the US state of Connecticut in the area of the community of East Haven on Long Island Sound . The undeveloped area extends along the Farm River . In 1998 it was acquired by the State of Connecticut and declared a state park to stave off property speculation.

geography

Farm River State Park is on the west bank of the Farm River . The 25 hectare (61-acre) area includes marshes, mud flats and a rocky stretch of coast that is used as a nesting place and habitat for various bird species. The unique composition of deep marshes and rock formations divides the park into an upper and a lower area.

history

Joseph Leary writes that the Farm River vies with the Housatonic River for the greatest number of names. At least 15 different names are known. Over the centuries it is often difficult to assign names of Indian and colonial origin. Among other things, he was referred to as "Deborah River". This relates to an incident when Deborah Chidsey (ship?) Left Governor Gurdon Saltonstall on a rock in the river as she waited for the tide to subside. The land along the river has been accompanied by vacation homes since the early 1970s, when land was cheap. In 1998 the state park area was acquired by the state of Connecticut when there was a risk that luxury properties could be built on the area. The state, in partnership with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Trust for Public Lands , acquired 57 acre (23 hectares) of land and another 15 acre (6 hectare) on Mansfield Grove Road for $ 1.75 million .

In 2006, Quinnipiac University, which operates the park, set up a wireless network communication system in the park, making it Connecticut's first state park with Wi-Fi . In the same year an empty building that was about to be demolished was destroyed by arson. In 2012 scouts created around 2 km of hiking trails. These now connect the DC Moore School with the Farm River State Park and Short Beach Road .

Fauna & flora

The diverse landscape offers ideal breeding conditions for various species of ducks, gulls, European herons and great blue herons . Crabs find ideal conditions in the marshland.

Freetime activities

Farm River State Park has no structures or roads, but has two hiking trails that lead to lookout points. Picnicking, hiking, biking, fishing, crab fishing, bird watching and boating are available in the park. However, access for boaters is restricted. The Quinnipiac University , which oversees the park for the State awards annual tickets for the boat launch.
