Farquhar Bellejambe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Farquhar Bellejambe (also Ferchard or Fercard Bellejambe ) († before 1327 ) was a Scottish clergyman. From 1304 he was Bishop of Caithness .

Farquhar Bellejambe was appointed archdeacon of the north Scottish diocese of Caithness in 1297 during the English occupation of Scotland at the instigation of King Edward I. Later he was also dean of Dornoch Cathedral , the headquarters of the diocese. Probably in the spring of 1304 he was elected Bishop of Caithness, whereupon he left for Rome in June 1304 to have his election confirmed by the Curia . On January 22, 1306, Pope Clement V confirmed the election. Farquhar was ordained bishop by Pedro Rodríguez , Cardinal Bishop of Sabina and then returned to Scotland. In April 1307, the him were temporalities of the diocese passed. Farquhar remained a loyal supporter of the English, despite the fact that Robert Bruce had risen to become King of Scots in early 1306 and carried on the War of Independence against England . In 1307 he refused Bruce's claim to the throne before he recognized Bruce as king after the subjugation of Northern Scotland towards the end of summer 1308. In 1312 Farquhar was involved in the negotiations that re-regulated the relationship between Scotland and Norway, and on October 29, 1312 he testified to the Inverness Agreement concluded with Norway . Otherwise, like Bishop Alan von Sodor, he was rarely politically active during the politically troubled times . He is last mentioned on July 10, 1321 when he attested a royal charter, but he probably died shortly before 1327.
