The fascia pectoralis ( Latin , also Fascia mamilla or Greek strophium , also called chest bandage ) was a part of the underwear of women in ancient Rome . It was a cloth band worn under a tunic and palla , which covered and supported the breasts.

This forerunner of the brassiere was also worn in sport by the athletes of the ancient world together with shorts ( subligaculum ).
