Setting is the fastening of the gemstone in a piece of jewelry, such as setting a diamond in a ring.

The gemstone setting ( Fasson ) is created by driving the metal over the stone. The punch is hit with a hammer and the punch deforms the metal.

Gemstones are set using a gemstone setter, while simpler setting work is often done by goldsmiths .

Frame types

  • Frame setting (closed version)
  • Prong setting (open setting in which the stone is held by thin wire prongs, e.g. for a solitaire ring )
  • Pavé setting (many smaller stones are set in such a way that a metal surface is completely filled)
