Fastnet Rock ( German Fastnet-Felsen , Irish Carraig Aonair ("lonely rock")) is a small island at the southernmost point off Ireland's coast. It is located 6.5 km southwest of Cape Clear Island and around 20 km off the coast of County Cork in the Celtic Sea . The rock protrudes 30 meters above the low water.
The small rock island is still split by a narrow ditch. The much smaller and shallower Little Fastnet has been nicknamed Teardrop (German tear ) because it was the last piece of land that saw the emigrating to America in the 19th century Irish from their home.
Fastnet Rock is the turning point for the famous Fastnet race for ocean yachts from Cowes to Plymouth over 608 nautical miles. Geologically, the rock consists of a slate with granite veins . The lighthouse is the tallest in Ireland (54 m).
