The Fatima Chapel Schardenberg , also called Granitene Marienburg , is a pilgrimage chapel in the Fronwald in the Upper Austrian municipality of Schardenberg . It was built between 1949 and 1951 on the site of a previous building in the historicist style.

history

In the Fronwald - five minutes away from the parish church - there was an old chapel in which St. Peter and the penitent Magdalena were venerated on an old cult site. The so-called Heidenstein still points out.

On Ascension Day in 1939, two deacons were ordained priests in the parish church of Schardenberg by Bishop Johannes Maria Gföllner . Last night, all the church decorations and flags were torn down by Nazi workers and carried off to the Fronwald. On the afternoon of the public holiday, the parishioners flocked to the May procession like a protest. Shortly afterwards there was a dry thunderstorm, with lightning striking the maypole on the market square and all Nazi symbols falling down; at the same time lightning struck the Fronwald, where the torn church flags lay. People saw it as a divine judgment.

In 1945 there was a renewal and the image of the Mother of God moved into the center. Since the number of pilgrims had increased significantly and the old chapel soon proved to be too small, it was decided to build a new, larger chapel.

From 1949 to 1951, today's chapel was built according to plans by the Linz architect Hans Foschum and consecrated in 1951. The statue of Our Lady comes from the same hand as the original in Fátima , Portugal. The Fatima days are celebrated on the 13th of May to October and thousands of pilgrims come to the shrine in the Fronwald.
