Fatou Mbye (journalist)

Fatou BK Mbye (* 1980 or 1981; † October 31, 2009 in Sukuta -Nema) was a Gambian journalist . She was a sports reporter and youth activist.

Life

Mbye, daughter of the physical education teacher Bakary Mbye, was known nationwide for her tireless commitment to the development of the sport in the country. She spent some time at West Coast Radio as a sports reporter and also worked for the Department of Youth and Sports before moving to KMC, where she worked until her premature death. Their contribution to the development of sport, particularly football, has been described as enormous. She was also a sports coordinator in the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Mbye died of kidney failure at age 28. Thousands of sympathizers came to the Sukuta Nema residence to pay their last respects to the deceased.

Awards and honors

  • 2009: Posthumous award from the Sports Journalists Association of The Gambia (SJAG) for a media colleague who has dedicated her entire life to sport
  • The Fatou Mbye Memorial Tournament, a friendly game between the SJAG and Serrekunda-East Sports Committee, took place in 2009 and 2010. After the sports journalist Lamin A. Darboe died in a marine accident, the name of the tournament was changed to SJAG memorial tournament in 2012.
