Lamin A. Darboe

Lamin A. Darboe (* early 1970s in Bakindick ; † November 20, 2010 in Barra ) was a Gambian educator and sports journalist . He died in a marine accident.

Life

Darboe attended Bakindick Lower Basic, after high school he attended Gambia College from 1999 to 2003 , completed the course for the Primary Teachers Certificate (PTC) and then became a teacher. After teaching first in Demba Kunda , later in Dingiri , in the Upper River Region and then in Mamuda in the North Bank Region , he decided after five years as a teacher to return to the Gambia College (or the Teacher Training College) and to complete his course for the Higher Teachers Certificate (HTC) there from 2007 to 2010. Most recently he taught at the Jamisa Upper Basic School in Brikama .

In addition to his work as a teacher, Darboe also worked as a sports editor for The Point newspaper (according to another source Foroyaa ). He was also president (treasurer, according to another source) of the Sports Journalists Association of The Gambia (SJAG).

On 20 November 2010 he was of Bakindick Mandinka over Barra and Banjul en route to Bakau to get in Independence Stadium the game of Gambian U-17 junior national football team against the team from Algeria (according to another source Gambian U-20 national football team against Tunisia ). Darboe used the Banjul – Barra ferry connection with his Land Cruiser and took the Johé ferry , but drove too far ahead and crashed his vehicle into the Gambia River . Attempts to save him were unsuccessful, he drowned in the river. The following day his body was recovered on the banks of Essau and later buried in the Old Jeshwang cemetery.

Awards and honors

  • The Fatou Mbye Memorial Tournament, a friendly match between SJAG and Serrekunda-East Sports Committee, took place in 2009 and 2010 and was a posthumous award from SJAG to journalist Fatou Mbye , who has dedicated her entire life to sport. After Darboe's death, the name of the tournament was changed to SJAG memorial tournament in 2012.
