Fatoumatta K. Jawara

Fatoumatta K. Jawara (also: Fatoumata or Fatou ; * 1983,) is a Gambian politician .

Jawara attended the Campama Primary School and then the Greater Banjul Junior School and the Kotu Senior Secondary School .

After graduating from high school, she joined the United Democratic Party (UDP). Jawara was elected President of the Female Youth President of the United Democratic Party (UDP) in 2010 and was last re-elected in December 2018.

Later she studied at the Management Development Institute (MDI) in business management ( business management ), but she had to cancel two months after the start because of their arrest.

On April 14, 2016, she was arrested at Westfield Junction in Serekunda together with Nogoi Njie , Solo Sandeng and others who had called for electoral reform and the resignation of Gambian President Yahya Jammeh at a demonstration . A total of 25 people were arrested and detained without charge for longer than the 72 hours prescribed by the Gambian constitution . While in custody at the headquarters of the Gambian National Intelligence Agency (NIA), she was tortured and subjected to severe sexual harassment.

On July 21, 2016, she and ten other people involved were sentenced to prison terms. An appeal process was still ongoing in mid-November 2016. Shortly after Adama Barrow won the presidential election on December 8, 2016, she was released after eight months in detention without any contact with her family.

In the 2017 parliamentary election , she ran as a candidate for UDP in the constituency of Tallinding Kujang in the Kanifing Administrative Region . With 48.43%, it was able to win the constituency before Ebrima Sonko (APRC) for itself.

In November 2019, the UDP dismissed eight party members from their party who were representing in parliament. The informed parliament now classifies the parliamentarians, including Jawara, as independent MPs.
