Constitution of the Gambia

The current constitution of the Gambia has been in force in the West African state of Gambia since 1997 and was last revised in 2017. It is divided into 23 chapters with 232 paragraphs .

history

The Gambian government intended to leave the Commonwealth Realm in 1965 and convert the Gambia into a presidential republic . A constitutional amendment was necessary for this, a referendum was held in 1965 . This failed just because of the necessary two-thirds majority . The referendum was repeated in 1970 and passed with the necessary majority. The constitution of the First Republic of Gambia came into force in 1970.

The 1970 constitution was repealed in 1994 by the military coup by the Armed Forces Provisional Ruling Council .

The constitution of the Second Republic of The Gambia was voted on in a constitutional referendum on August 8, 1996 , which then came into force on January 1, 1997.

The current constitution was last amended in 2017.
