Nogoi Njie (also spelled Nogoye Njie , born 1965 ) is a Gambian politician and a victim of torture .

Life

Njie was involved in the Women's Wing of the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) and was Deputy Vice President of the sub-organization from at least 2016.

On April 14, 2016, she was arrested at Westfield Junction in Serekunda together with Fatoumatta K. Jawara , Solo Sandeng and others who had called for electoral reform and the resignation of Gambian President Yahya Jammeh . A total of 25 people were arrested and detained without charge for longer than the 72 hours prescribed by the Gambian constitution .

On May 11, 2016, she made an affidavit while still held in Mile 2 prison . After the arrest, she was taken to the headquarters of the Gambian intelligence agency, the National Intelligence Agency (NIA). She detailed how she was tortured and said she saw Solo Sandeng, who she believed was dead, and who was also tortured. Sandeng's death was announced by the authorities on June 13, 2016 for no further reason.

On July 21, 2016, 11 of the people involved were sentenced to prison terms. An appeal process was still ongoing in mid-November 2016.

She was released after the Gambian President Adama Barrow took office .

She was forced to give up her job as a business woman due to damage to her health from the torture. In October 2018, a request for financial and medical help attracted attention. She subsequently received support from the mayoress of Banjuls, Rohey Malick Lowe , and the Gambian First Lady Fatoumatta Bah-Barrow, among others .

In early 2019, she testified as a witness in a court case against Yankuba Badjie , the former head of the Gambian intelligence agency , the National Intelligence Agency (NIA). She repeated the statements made in 2016 and gave further details. Accordingly, after staying in Mile 2 prison, she was first taken to Mansa Konko and later to Janjanbureh prison. Because of an illness, she was treated in the hospital in Bansang .

At the end of October 2019, she repeated and specified her statements before the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission to come to terms with Jammeh's reign.

Njie lives in Manduar and has five daughters.
