Fawaz Jneid

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fawaz Jneid ( Arabic فواز جنيد, DMG Fawwāz Ǧunaid ; * 1964 in Tripoli ) is a former imam of the Salafist As Soennah Mosque in The Hague . Although he was born in Lebanon , he is a Syrian citizen; he also has a Dutch passport. He worked as an imam in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates ; in the latter country, he was banned from preaching because of his extremist speeches. After the Gulf War he ran into problems due to his anti-American stance and moved to the Netherlands in 1992. Fawaz speaks Dutch but has an interpreter assist him in public.

A few weeks before Theo van Gogh's murder , he pronounced curses on Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Theo van Gogh in a sermon :

"Oh God, here are Ayaan Hirsi Ali and van Gogh (community says Amen),
you should burden them with your anger and contempt (Amen),
Oh God, give van Gogh a disease that no one on this earth can cure (Amen) ,
He is supposed to demand death in vain and not get it,
Oh God, get van Gogh a misery in which he demands death and does not get it,
(...) Oh God, blind Ayaan Hirsi Ali's eyesight as you blind her heart have,
(...) Oh God, get your brain cancer,
Oh God, get your tongue cancer,
Oh God ... "

In November, Ayyan Hirsi Ali filed a complaint against him about threats.

In April 2008, Fawaz referred to the Dutch MP Ahmed Marcouch as Munāfiq (hypocrite), because Marcouch is said to have recommended Muslim youth to refrain from a certain Islamic dress code. Marcouch called Fawaz's statement a fatwa and called for the introduction of a legal ban on the use of fatwas. The Moroccan Mayor of Rotterdam Ahmed Aboutaleb called for the dismissal of the controversial imam. Aboutaleb said that Fawaz harmed the Moroccan community and brought Moroccans into disrepute, so that companies would not hire Moroccans and therefore young people of Moroccan origin would have difficulties finding a job. Jneid also criticized the Dutch politician Femke Halsema for asking them to remove the headscarf; in his opinion, it protects against rape.

In the criminal case against the anti-Islamic politician Geert Wilders , Jneid was one of the 18 witnesses asked by him, but the Amsterdam court did not take notice of a corresponding summons.
