Ahmed Marcouch (born May 2, 1969 in Beni-Boughafer , Morocco ) is a Moroccan-born Dutch politician . He was a member of the Amsterdam City Council from March 11th to September 8th, 2010 . From June 17, 2010 to March 23, 2017 he was a member of the PvdA ( Partij van de Arbeid ) in the Second Chamber of the States General , the Dutch Parliament. He has been Mayor of Arnhem since September 1st, 2017 .

Life

He was born in a coastal city in northern Morocco. His father left the family for Europe in the early 1970s and worked as a guest worker in Amsterdam. His mother died when he was three years old; at the time he had nine siblings. His father had five children with his second wife. In 1979, 10-year-old Ahmed and the rest of the family reunited with their father. The family lived in the Oosterparkbuurt district of Amsterdam . He hadn't gone to school in Morocco; At the fourth Montessori school in Amsterdam-Oost , he learned to read and write in Dutch within two years . He attended the individual technical lessons (Individueel Technisch Onderwijs - ITO) and the MTS ( Middelbare technical school ) and began his career as a nurse in the Leo Polakhuis nursing home ( Leo Polak House) in Amsterdam.

Then from 1993 worked ten years for the Amsterdam police, the last five as a brigadier (equivalent to a German police chief ). During this time he also trained as a teacher for political education . He was a teacher of social sciences at the ROC ( Regionaal opleidingencentrum ) and worked in Amsterdam as a process manager . He became known in the Netherlands as a spokesman and member of the board of the Union of Moroccan Mosques in Amsterdam and the Surrounding Area (UMMAO).

In May 2006, he became district mayor in the Amsterdam district of Slotervaart , which is considered a problem municipality . He is the first Moroccan and Muslim district mayor in the Netherlands. His responsibilities include security, education, and general affairs. Marcouch suggested Islamic teaching in public schools. In addition, he is strongly committed to equal rights for homosexuals in Slotervaart and in Muslim circles: for example, he took part in the Amsterdam Gay Pride in 2009 and opened the Muslim sugar festival in the gay bar Havanna Club .

Marcouch was referred to as Munāfiq (hypocrite) by the ultra-orthodox Salafist Imam Fawaz Jneid in The Hague , someone who pretends to be a Muslim but does not believe. Marcouch called on young Muslims to speak out against violence in the name of Islam.
