Feartagar Castle (also Jennings Castle called Irish Caisleán Fhearta Ghearr ) is a Tower House km on a hill east of the village about 2.3 Kilconly and about 8.4 km northwest of Tuam in Ireland's County Galway . Feartagar Castle is considered a National Monument .

history

The Tower House was built between the 15th and 17th centuries for the De Burgos family (also Burkes or de Búrca ). These were descendants of William de Burgh (approx. 1160–1205 / 1206), an Anglo-Norman knight and close friend of King John of England , and ruled Connacht for centuries . In 1651, when Ireland was retaken , they were expropriated. The castle later fell into the hands of the Blakes of Tuam, and then into the hands of the Jennings .

Feartagar Castle has five floors and a floor area of ​​12 meters by 10 meters. There is a crowd watchtower on every corner , a machiculus over the entrance gate and a lavatory bay . The first floor has a vaulted ceiling and there are two stone stairs in the castle.
