Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company was a shipyard in the United States . It belonged to the US Steel concern and was located in Kearny , New Jersey , just before the Hackensack River confluence with Newark Bay .

The shipyard was founded in 1917 when US Steel needed ocean-going ships to transport steel products. During the last months of the First World War , a few warships were built for the United States Navy , after which the shipyard concentrated mainly on the construction of cargo ships. The shipyard developed into a major employer in the region. In 1940 6,000 workers were employed there.

In 1930 the shipyard began building warships for the US Navy again. By the time the shipyard closed in 1949, 79 destroyers , 3 cruisers and a number of cargo and tankers had been completed.

An industrial area was built on the former shipyard site; several dock basins and a crane are still reminiscent of shipbuilding today.
