If a public holiday falls on a Saturday, Sunday or a (fixed) public holiday, the day off will be rescheduled. The employer has the following options for his employees : one day off within a month ( company holidays ), one day more annual vacation or one day more pay (flexibility due to the order situation). It is still common practice to declare the following day of the week a day off for everyone.

The last public holiday to be added was May Day in 1994 . Some leaders like Ruairi Quinn (TD) have voted in favor of an extra holiday or two to be in line with the European average.
