The Rühlermoor field railway is still operated today (2019) on a 120 km long (2013) rail network with a track width of 900 mm in the Rühle oil field in Bourtanger Moor , near the town of Twist . It is the largest contiguous light rail network in Germany and is used today for peat extraction and oil production.
history
The first light rail tracks were laid in 1913 by the Heseper peat factory. On a longer route to Meppen that went into operation in 1922, public passenger traffic and the transport of goods and general cargo were even limited until 1956. The route initially led to Meppen, where the wagons of the peat curtains were lifted with a cable crane over the Ems to a port and transshipment facility on the other bank of the Ems. The Rühler Moor peat power station was operated from 1926–1974 with black peat delivered via the field railway. The line from Groß Hesepe to Rühle was taken out of service in 1974 after the section leading to Meppen had been closed in 1970.
In 1927, the Heseper peat factory took over the Verhoeve'schen Torfstreufabriken GmbH Schöninghsdorf and called itself Annaveen GmbH. The networks of the two field railways were connected to one another during the Second World War. After Graf von Landsberg-Velen left Heseper Torfwerk GmbH as a co-owner in 1933, Georg Klasmann became the sole shareholder. In 1971 the two plants were combined to form Klasmann-Werke GmbH. After the merger with the Deilmann company, the company was renamed Klasmann-Deilmann GmbH in 1990.
Today, the route is mainly used by the oil companies ExxonMobil, Gaz de France and Jan Kwade & Sohn to reach more than 200 oil production sites in the Rühlermoor by rail.
