Laura Soares Abrantes is an East Timorese sociologist, independence and women's activist.

Career

As a student in Java , Abrantes was already active in the East Timorese resistance against the Indonesian occupation (1974-1999). She graduated in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in educational psychology. In East Timor, Abrantes continued to work in the resistance with the help of her work with the Catholic scouts and a worker for Caritas and the women's rights organization Fokupers in Dili .

In 2011, Abrantes received a master's degree in sociology in Brazil for her work on the Timorese women's network Rede-Feto Timor-Leste . In 2012 she was a gender consultant for the East Timorese women's rights organization APSC-TL. On October 23, 2017, Abrantes was appointed to the East Timor State Council by President Francisco Guterres .
