The international field handball game Germany - Austria 1925 was played on September 13, 1925 in Halle. It was the first official international match in handball history.

prehistory

In Austria handball had only been played for three and a half years.

By contrast, there were already around 3,000 teams in Germany, but these were divided between many associations. Germany was represented in the international match by the selection of the German Sports Authority for Athletics , the third largest association in terms of members, behind the associations - German Turnerschaft and the Arbeiter-Turn- und Sportbund , the third largest association. The largest association, the German Gymnastics Association, rejected any international comparison of sports and the Workers 'Gymnastics and Sports Association played national games against other workers' sports associations in the period from 1925 to 1932. The first international match of the ATSB took place on July 25, 1925 during the Workers' Olympics in Frankfurt am Main against Belgium and was won 12-2.

The Germans thought that this game would be a hopeless fight for the Austrians.

Choice of the referee

It was agreed that the host country would propose three referees and the opponent could choose the referee.

Reactions

The Sport-Tagblatt found the Austrian team to be "technically and tactically" superior. They saw the greatest advantage in the "uniformity and balance of the whole team".

Around 100 people received the athletes at the train station.
