A field cook is a helper in the catering service of the disaster control and a function in the military.

He is trained for the preparation of large quantities of food under difficult conditions. The food is often produced on mobile cooking units, for example field cookers . The field cook bears a great responsibility, especially in the military, as tasty and filling food contributes significantly to the morale of the troops.

Civil protection

The field cook is a catering assistant with special additional training, which qualifies him to operate a field cooker and to prepare large quantities of food in the event of major damage, disasters or other major events.

The training lasts 30 to 40 hours. It is carried out by the catering organizations ASB , DRK , JUH , MHD , DLRG , fire brigade and THW according to their own concepts.

In disaster control, the field cook is usually also used as a subordinate for a catering squad.

The field cook (troop cook) in the military is trained to prepare food for the troops in the event of war. The Bundeswehr training takes four weeks. It belongs to the class of supply and replenishment units and prepares meals directly in the barracks or in the field , where they are also served. For this purpose, field cookers such. B. in the Bundeswehr the tactical field kitchen 250 is used. Nowadays, many armed forces increasingly use ready-to-use convenience food for field catering, which only needs to be warmed up in the field kitchen and greatly simplifies the work and training of the field cook. Nevertheless, the field cook should also be able to improvise in the event of supply shortages and prepare nutritious meals from the ingredients that are available on site. For this reason, soldiers with prior knowledge of food processing are usually preferred for use as field cooks, as they are e.g. B. be taught in civilian training as a cook, butcher or baker .
