Feldkommandostelle Hochwald (also known as Schwarzschanze ) was the code name of a so-called headquarters for Heinrich Himmler in Possessern (1938 to 1945 Großgarten , now in Polish Pozezdrze ), East Prussia , only approx. 20 km east of the Führer headquarters Wolfsschanze .

history

In 1941, shortly before the German attack on the Soviet Union , the construction of a field headquarters for the SS began . It was built in the middle of the forest in 1941 and consisted of numerous well camouflaged bunkers and barracks , protected by minefields and barbed wire. When this field command post became too small in 1942, 20 wooden barracks were built in the forest for the staff of 48 people. Himmler's bunker was 70 m long and 11 m wide. On January 14, 1945, the facilities were blown up before the approaching Soviet soldiers and largely destroyed. The remains of the Hochwald field command post are located directly east of the Angerburg (today: Węgorzewo ) - Lötzen (today: Giżycko ) road.
