Felipe Santiago Gutiérrez (born May 20, 1824 in Texcoco , † April 4, 1904 ibid) was a Mexican painter.

Career

He attended school in his hometown and continued his education in 1836 at the Academia de San Carlos in Mexico City . There he was a student of the Catalan painter Pelegrín Clavé . Felipe Santiago Gutiérrez lived in Toluca from 1848. Between 1848 and 1854 he traveled within the country as a teacher at the Literary Institute for Toluca. Study trips took him to the USA from 1862 and 1868 and from 1868 to 1872 he studied in Rome, Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, ​​Florence, Bologna and Turin. 1872–73 he visited New York, where he met the Colombian writer and diplomat Rafael Pombo , who invited him to Bogota. In Colombia he received numerous awards and recognitions. There he was also founding director of the Academy of Fine Arts, which opened on July 20, 1886. Felipe Santiago Gutiérrez died of old age on April 4th in his native Texcoco.

Works

Today there is the "Museo Felipe Santiago Gutiérrez" in Toluca (Mexico), which shows some of his works. With twelve oil paintings, the National Museum of Colombia has the largest public collection of works by the artist in Colombia. Other museums and libraries with works by the artist are located in the Biblioteca Luis Angel Arango (Bogotá), Universidad Nacional de Colombia (Bogotá), Quinta de Bolívar (Bogotá), Academy of Language (Bogotá), Museo Nacional de Arte (Mexico City) ), Convento de Toluca (Mexico) and other national museums.
