Felix Ruwimowitsch Gantmacher , also Feliks, Russian Феликс Рувимович Гантмахер (born February 23, 1908 in Odessa ; † May 16, 1964 in Moscow ) was a Russian mathematician.

Life

Gantmacher studied at the Institute for National Education in Odessa with the degree in 1930. One of his teachers was Nikolai Grigoryevich Chebotaryov . He taught at various universities in Odessa, completed his habilitation in 1938 (Russian doctorate) and was then at the Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union. From 1942 to 1946 he was department head at the Central Aerodynamic Institute and from 1947 professor at the Moscow Physics and Technology Institute.

He dealt with matrix theory and applied mathematics (especially aerodynamic problems in aviation). He wrote a well-known monograph on matrices. He also dealt with Lie groups.

He is the father of the physicist Vsevolod Gantmacher .
