Vsevolod Felixowitsch Gantmacher ( Russian Всеволод Феликсович Гантмахер , English transcription Vsevolod Feliksovich Gantmakher; born October 8, 1935 in Moscow ; † March 5, 2015 in Chernogolowka near Moscow) was a Russian physicist and university lecturer .

Life

Gantmacher, son of the Jewish mathematician Felix Ruwimowitsch Gantmacher and his wife Assi Jewsejewna born. Lerner concluded in 1959 the physics -Studies the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MFTI) from. As a student, he began working at the Institute for Physical Problems (IFP) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR) (later the Kapiza Institute) as early as 1957 . He found a fundamentally new type of propagation of electromagnetic waves in metals with special Fermi surfaces in the magnetic field with regard to spiral-shaped standing waves ( Gantmacher- Kaner waves ). After completing his apprenticeship , he received his doctorate in 1964 at the Institute for Solid State Physics of the AN-SSSR as a candidate in physical-mathematical sciences , where he now also worked scientifically alongside his work at the IFP. To this end, he began teaching at the MFTI in 1964. In 1967 he was with his dissertation size effects in metals for the Physico-Mathematical Sciences PhD doctorate. In 1990 he became editor-in-chief of the Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics Letters (JETP Letters) . In 1997 he became a corresponding member of the AN-SSSR. From 2000 he taught at the Lomonosov University in Moscow . In 2011 he became a full member of the AN-SSSR.

Gantmacher investigated electron scattering . He determined the electron- phonon - scattering cross sections in tin , indium , bismuth , antimony , tungsten , molybdenum and copper and clarified the specifics of the semi-metals on. Next he examined the transport properties of photo - semiconductors at low temperatures. Finally, he investigated the transport properties of metallic high- resistance alloys and high-temperature superconductors .

Gantmacher found his grave in Moscow's Donskoy Cemetery .
