Emanuil Aisikowitsch Kaner ( Russian Эмануил Айзикович Канер ; born November 19, 1931 in Kharkov ; † July 25, 1986 ) was a Soviet - Ukrainian physicist and university professor .

Life

Kaner was evacuated with his mother to Blagoveschensk during the German-Soviet War . In 1954 he joined the physics -Studies at the University of Kharkov from. After completing his apprenticeship with Mark Asbel , he received his doctorate in 1954 with his candidate dissertation Theory of Cyclotron Resonance in Metals as a candidate in the physical and mathematical sciences .

In 1955 Kaner entered the newly established Institute of Radiophysics and Electronics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR . In 1963 he was with his dissertation The Bose excitation and resonance phenomena in metals for the Physico-Mathematical Sciences PhD doctorate. In 1965 he founded the department for theoretical solid state physics and then headed it. Alexander Vilenkin and Robert Schechter were among his employees. From 1966 Kaner taught at the chair for theoretical physics at Kharkov University. He was co-editor of the international journal Solid State Communications .

Kaner's main areas of work were solid state physics and the electrodynamics of metals. His first work dealt with the interference of light in thin metal layers and the theory of the abnormal skin effect . He studied electromagnetic waves in metals and discovered Landau attenuation in metals. This opened the way to radio spectroscopy of metals. Together with WF Gantmacher he discovered and investigated the single-particle mechanism of the penetration of radio waves into metals. He investigated problems of instability of waves in plasmas . In 1980 he received the State Prize of the USSR for his work on helicon - phonon resonance and electron- phonon interaction . Independently of AL Schawlow , he proposed a laser method for isotope separation .
