Viktor Valentinovich Eremenko ( Russian Виктор Валентинович Ерёменко , Ukrainian Віктор Валентинович Єременко / Viktor Yeremenko * 26. July 1932 in Kharkov , Ukrainian SSR , † 2. May 2017 in Kharkiv ) was a Soviet and Ukrainian physicist and university teacher .

Life

Jerjomenko comes from a family of physicists. He graduated from Kharkov University in 1955 with a degree in physics specializing in low-temperature physics . He then worked at the Kiev Institute of Physics of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (AN-USSR) . There he was after his postgraduate at Antonina Fedorovna Prichotko , VL Broude and EI Rashba 1958 Mathematical Physics and candidates of science doctorate. With his candidate dissertation Optical and photoelectric phenomena in cadmium sulfide - crystals he had first the existence of exciton - impurity detected complexes and described.

In 1961 the presidium of the AN-USSR transferred Yeryomenko to the Werkin -Institute for Physics and Technology of Low Temperatures (FTINT) of the AN-USSR. In 1966 he received his doctorate there with his dissertation The optical spectroscopy of antiferromagnetics for a doctorate in physical-mathematical sciences . Since then, he has taught at the Chair of Magnetism at the University of Kharkov (appointed professor in 1968, retired in 1999 ), which his students have directed since 1968. In 1976 he became a member of the New York Academy of Sciences and in 1978 he became a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR . Since 1990 he has been editor-in-chief of the American Institute of Physics' journal Low Temperature Physics . 1991–2006 he was director of FTINT. In 1993 he became a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences .

Jerjomenko's main areas of work were magnetism at low temperatures, magnetic phase transitions in antiferromagnetics, magneto-optics , superconductivity and galvanomagnetic effects in metals, as well as exciton processes in antiferromagnetics, semiconductors and molecular crystals.
