Kirill Dmitrievich Sinelnikov ( Russian Кирилл Дмитриевич Синельников ; born May 16, jul. / 29. May  1901 greg. In Pavlograd , yekaterinoslav governorate , Russian Empire ; † 16th October 1966 in Kharkov , Ukrainian SSR , Soviet Union ) was a Soviet- Ukrainian nuclear physicist .

Life

Sinelnikow, the son of a country doctor, began studying physics at the Crimean University in Simferopol in 1920 and also worked at the chair . He got to know IW Kurchatov . He graduated prematurely in 1923 and worked in Baku as a lecturer at Baku University .

After one of his lectures, Sinelnikov was invited by AF Joffe in 1924 to work at the Leningrad Physics-Technical Institute (LFTI) . There Sinelnikov met his fellow student Kurchatov again, with whom he was now working. In 1928 he was sent to Ernest Rutherford at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge to learn about the latest developments in nuclear physics , particle accelerators , plasma physics and also vacuum metallurgy .

In 1930, Sinelnikov moved to the Ukrainian Physics and Technology Institute (UFTI) in Kharkiv, which was founded in 1928, where he headed the department for nuclear physics (canceled in 1942 due to the German-Soviet war ). In 1932 he split with AK Walter , AI Leschunski and DG Latyschew the lithium - atomic nucleus by bombardment with 300-400 keV - protons . In 1944 he rebuilt the UFTI as its new director with Kurchatov's support, which was now fully dedicated to the Soviet atomic bomb project . In 1948 he became a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic . In 1956 he established plasma physics and nuclear fusion as new research directions at the UFTI. He brought these research directions to the University of Kharkiv in 1962 , which now trained physicists for the many nuclear research centers in the Soviet Union . Other areas of work at the UFTI were the physics of dielectrics and semiconductors as well as wave optics and electron optics .
