Georgi Dmitrijewitsch Latyshev ( Russian Гео́ргий Дми́триевич Ла́тышев ; * 4th February July / 17th February  1907 greg. In Beschiza near Brjansk ; † 3rd April 1973 ) was a Russian nuclear physicist and university professor .

Life

Latyshev came from a peasant family, entered the Komsomol in 1923 and graduated from the Petrograd Polytechnic Institute in 1929 with a degree in physics . 1930–1941 he headed a laboratory in the Ukrainian Physical-Technical Institute (UFTI) of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (AN-USSR) in Kharkov, founded in 1928 . In 1932 he split with KD Sinelnikov, AI Leschunski and AK Walter first in the Soviet Union the lithium - atomic nucleus by bombardment with 300-400 keV - protons . In 1940 he received his doctorate in physical and mathematical sciences . He then headed a department of the Institute of Physics of the AN-USSR and then a laboratory in the Leningrad Physics-Technical Institute (LFTI) . In 1945 he became a corresponding member of the AN-USSR. In 1949 he received the Stalin Prize for his research on gamma radiation in the LFTI. However, it turned out that he had falsified the results, but in view of his proletarian origins and party affiliation, after a lengthy investigation by an investigative commission in 1950, this only led to a reprimand for him. Instead, the institute's director, AF Joffe, was held responsible for the misconduct, which contributed to his dismissal.

In 1953 Latyshev was appointed to the chair of physics at the Leningrad Technological Institute . In 1958 Latyshev founded the Institute for Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic (AN-KasSSR) and headed it as director and member of the AN-KasSSR. In 1965 he returned to the AN-USSR Physics Institute . 1970–1973 he worked at the AN-USSR Institute for Nuclear Research .

Latyshev's field of work was nuclear physics, in particular the interaction of gamma radiation with matter , nuclear magnetic resonance and non-destructive material testing with gamma radiation.
