Yuri Moissejewitsch Kagan ( Russian Ю́рий Моисе́евич Кага́н ; * July 6, 1928 in Moscow ; † June 4, 2019 ) was a Russian theoretical physicist and university professor .

Life

Juri Kagan, son of the lawyer Moissei Alexandrowitsch Kagan (1889–1966), managing director of the All-Ukrainian State Bank and later an official in the People's Commissariat for Agriculture , and the dentist Rachil Solomonovna, née. Chazrewina (1890–1967) from Vitebsk , was evacuated to Buguruslan after the beginning of the German-Soviet War , where his mother worked as a city hygienist . After returning to Moscow, he worked in a military factory and attended the evening school of the working class youth.

In 1944, Kagan began studying at the Moscow State Aviation Institute and graduated from the Moscow Engineering-Physical Institute in 1955 by passing LD Landau's theoretical minimum with 11 exams in mathematics and theoretical physics before graduating . From 1956 he worked at the Kurchatov Atomic Energy Institute . He became a doctor of physical-mathematical sciences and in 1964 a professor at the Moscow Engineering-Physical Institute . In 1970 he became a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and in 1984 a full member. He was co-editor of the journal for experimental and theoretical physics . Kagan became a member of the American Physical Society in 1994 , a member of the Academia Europaea in 1995 and a foreign member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1998 .

Kagan's main areas of work were the kinetic gas theory , the theory of condensed matter and the interaction of radiation and matter. He founded the kinetic theory of gases with degrees of freedom of rotation ("Kagan vector"). He developed a consistent theory of the Mössbauer effect in regular and non-regular crystals as well as a many-body theory of the electronic and phononic properties of non- transition metals . He worked on the theory of metastable metallic hydrogen . Together with IM Lifschitz , he demonstrated the nucleation of a stable phase near absolute zero as a tunnel effect process. His contributions to the theory of quantum diffusion and the localization of atoms and excitations in crystals and glasses at low temperatures were important . The temperature and concentration dependence of quantum diffusion and self-localization he predicted was confirmed experimentally.

Kagan was born with the writer Tatiana Nikolaevna. Wirta (* 1930), daughter of the writer Nikolai Wirta , married. Kagan's brother Boris was a cyberneticist and married to the writer Soja Boguslawskaja . Kagan's sister Jelena is a writer and was married to the poet Pawel Kogan . The chemist Sachar Rogowin , the writer Sachar Khazrewitsch , the engineer Naum Rogowin and the actress Walentina Wagrina are or were cousins of Yuri Kagan.
