Rock carving Horsahallen
The rock carving Horsahallen (also Histhallen) in Möckleryd near Torhamn in the Blekinge province in Sweden is the largest rock carving area in the province. The petroglyphs are arranged in groups in a semicircle. Two pictures of horses gave the place its name.
Here you can find about 150 figures on an area of about 20.0 m long and 10.0 m wide. Among them are 85 ships, 20 pans , 18 soles of the feet , 10 animals, two people and several inexplicable scratches.
The large number of carvings in Horsahallen suggests that it was an important place in the Bronze Age , even if one cannot determine whether it was a trading post, a seasonal meeting place or a place of worship .
The scratches on the two horse representations that gave the same name are also difficult to interpret, not only because of the differences in the symbols, but also because the images have been changed and supplemented over the centuries. Even if z. If, for example, the ships in the seafaring of that time were more involved with fishing, then one puzzles over the symbolism on the ships, which may be related to Nordic mythology .
