Rock carvings by Herand

The rock carvings of Herand consist of about 150 petroglyphs in Bakko, 500 m east of Herand in Jondal in Fylke Vestland in Norway .

The field is located in a 7.5 m long and maximally 4.0 m wide outcrop near the road 550 to Utne . There are boats, the soles of your feet , 23 people, rings and bowls . The boat with five crew members is very flat, weathered and difficult to see and can be described as a “leftover” of a boat figure. The field was canceled due to the many erotic motifs. It is believed that the carvings date from the younger Bronze Age (1100–500 BC). The first report on the rock carvings comes from 1903, by the local historian and pastor of Ullensvang Olaf Olafsen (1843–1932).

New rock carvings were found in several investigations. From 1972 onwards, conservation was carried out. The incisions were made in the rock surface with metal tools or hard rock. Originally, they were not painted in, today specialists do this in order to emphasize the motifs more clearly.
