In academic teaching and research, Felwine Sarr deals with macroeconomics , political economy , econometrics , development economics , epistemology and the history of religion . In his highly acclaimed work Afrotopia , which was awarded the Grands prix des associations littéraires in the research category in 2016, he uses postcolonial theories to devote himself to the decolonization of Africa and advocates the reappropriation of African metaphors for the future. In developing African democracies , the aim should not be to reproduce the history of the West; rather, Africa must reinvent itself through a synthesis of traditional and contemporary forms of organization. The book was published in German translation in January 2019. Rainer Gruszczynski criticized Sarr's recommendation to Africans to forego family planning and birth control so that the "demographic losses" that Africa incurred through slavery could be offset.

Sarr's work also includes other essays and several literary works. He is also co-founder of the Senegalese publisher Jimsaan . Sarr is also active as a musician and has released three albums: Civilization ou Barbarie (2000), Les mots du Récit (2005) and Bassaï (2007).

In March 2018, French President Emmanuel Macron Sarr commissioned the French art historian Bénédicte Savoy to explore the possibilities and criteria for returning colonial cultural assets from French museums to African countries. On November 23, 2018, Sarr and Savoy submitted their final report entitled Rapport sur la restitution du patrimoine culturel africain (German: Report on the restitution of African cultural assets ). The report is publicly available in the French original and in an English translation. In an interview six months later, he was disillusioned with the French attitude, but saw positive signals from Germany.
