Career

Opabunmi began his footballing career during his training at the Methodist High School Ibadan for the high school team Old Boys in 1997. The midfielder took part in the 2001 U-17 World Cup with Nigeria and was second with his team behind France occupy. He was the key player in the Nigerian youth team for which he scored five goals during the tournament. He was, behind the French Florent Sinama-Pongolle , the second best goalscorer of this world championship and finished third in the election for the tournament's player. His achievements caught the attention of top European clubs and in 2001 he moved from his Nigerian club Shooting Stars FC (3SC) to Switzerland to the Grasshopper Club Zurich . There he was under contract until 2004 before moving to the Israeli club Hapoel Be'er Shewa . There he did not last long, however, and he left the club after half a year in the direction of the French second division team Chamois Niortais . He played there until 2006 and then returned to his hometown club Shooting Stars FC. In the spring of 2007, the attacking midfielder ended his career due to persistent knee problems. From March 2010, however, he was aiming for a comeback and stayed fit at 3SC .

Opabunmi took part in the 2002 World Cup with the Nigerian national soccer team and was the youngest World Cup participant there. He came there in the last group game in the 0-0 win against England for his only appearance.
