Use of the femidome

The Femidom , also known as the “ female condom ”, has been a contraceptive that has been available since 1990 and that also offers protection against sexually transmitted diseases.

A femidome is 17 to 18 cm long and consists of thin, tear-resistant plastic ( polyethylene or polyurethane , in newer products also nitrile rubber ). It is equipped with two rings, of which the outer one lies outside the vagina in front of the large labia and the inner one is inserted into the vagina like a pessary (diaphragm).

The Pearl Index of the femidoma is 5 to 25 (i.e. 5 to 25 out of 100 women who use contraception for a year will statistically get pregnant ). In contrast, it is two to twelve for the male condom .

The advantage is that the use of the femidome does not depend on the rigidity of the penis and it can be used up to ten hours before sexual intercourse.

Since Femidome are not made of natural rubber latex, they can also be used with a latex allergy . The costs are around three to five euros per piece. In Switzerland it is sold by Swiss AIDS Help for 1.50 francs each.

Special forms

Special shape VA wow with triangular outer ring

The VA wow latex female condom has been available since mid-2009 , the outer ring of which is not round, but rather like a triangle and which has a sponge inside instead of a ring.

The South African sonnets Ehlers presented with Rape-ax in 2005 a special form (rigid, not flexible) prior to the prevention of pregnancy in case of rape is to serve.

Another form is the "barrier", also known as the "bikini condom", a somewhat older variant that still exists today. The condom (rather bag-shaped) is stretched completely over the vulva and perineum and attached to the thighs with thick rubber bands.
