Rape-aXe , also called Rapex , is a variant of the Femidom concept that was developed in 2005 by the South African Sonette Ehlers and presented for the first time. It is intended to protect against rape and to prevent pregnancy and venereal diseases in the event of rape.

application

Rape-aXe is inserted by the woman into the vagina like a tampon , where, according to the inventor, it can stay for up to 24 hours. During penetration , small barbs dig into the penis and cause severe pain in men. The barbs can only be removed by a medical professional. This should also make it easier to identify the perpetrator in the event of rape. Also protects Rape-ax - like other Femidoms - before pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases such as an HIV - infection . The inventor of Rape-aXe According to its own information, it was inspired by a male member trapped in a trouser zipper.

background

South Africa has the highest rate of rape in the world. Around 52,000 cases are registered every year (as of 2005). The number of unreported cases is estimated by human rights organizations many times higher, sometimes 1.5 million per year.

The product has been associated with the myth of the dentate vagina in the past . The South African Jaap Haumann made a similar invention from Clocolan . According to an article from 2000, this invention is said to inflict far more dangerous injuries on the rapist than Rape-aXe.

The patent was published on October 29, 2008 with the numbers ZA200702952 and WO2006029420 and the title Rape victim protector and rapist identifier . "Ehlers Sonette Elizabeth" is registered as the patent owner and inventor. In the drawings for the patent, the construction and function of the two rows of embedded barbs, which are released by penetration and set up in the shape of a shark tooth, are shown. The detailed functionality, the difference to similar patents and the option of identifying the rapist with a microchip are described in detail in the text of the patent specification.

Launch

According to Ehlers, he has been working on the patent for Rape-aXe since around 1970.

The market launch of the product has been repeatedly delayed. According to the first official website, mass production should start in the second half of 2006. Due to a trademark conflict, the product name has now been changed from Rapex to Rape-aXe. In mid-2009 the functionality of the concept had still not been tested in practice. In the run-up to the 2010 soccer World Cup , 30,000 units of Rape-aXe were distributed free of charge in South Africa . In 2016, the product was not yet available on the market. As a result, it was to be introduced in South Africa by means of a crowdfunding campaign at the end of 2017, but by January 2019 less than US $ 5,000 of the required US $ 310,000 had been raised.

criticism

Some critics fear that the use of Rape-aXe increases the risk of rape victims, additional injuries or death. According to a representation by the taz , sexual assaults cannot be prevented by rape-aXe, "but they can probably ensure that rapists do not become repeat offenders."
