The Fennoscandian Ice Sheet (also known as the Scandinavian Ice Sheet ) was a massive ice sheet in Fennoscandinavia . The area includes the Scandinavian Peninsula , Finland , Karelia and the Kola Peninsula . During the various glacial periods of the Quaternary , glaciers came several times for a short geological time via the North Cape to what is now northern Germany, Poland and Belarus, leaving behind moraines such as the Baltic ridges and the Belarusian ridges . In Fennoscandia itself landforms find the glacial series such as the Salpausselkä - and Suomenselkä - moraines in Finland.

The most recent ice advance to mainland Europe took place during the Vistula Ice Age , in a stadial about 22,000 years ago to 18,000 years ago, when the ice reached south of what is now Berlin.
