Feraklos
Feraklos (also Faraklos ) is a medieval fortress on the east coast of Rhodes , north of Charaki . It is named after the Faraklos hill, which has been settled and fortified since ancient times.
A fortress was built by the Byzantines on the group of hills , which was conquered by the Knights of St. John in 1306 . Feraklos was the first seat of the Knights of St. John on Rhodes. Later, in 1470, under the growing Ottoman threat , it was enlarged at the instigation of Grand Master Giovanni Battista Orsini . The fortress Feraklos could never be conquered by the Ottomans. At the foot of the castle hill, the Johanniter built a sugar mill.
Most of the ascent stairs to the fortress have fallen into disrepair (status 2009).
