Ferdinand Dickel (born May 22, 1854 in Michelbach , † July 27, 1917 in Darmstadt ) was a German teacher and entomologist .

life and work

Ferdinand Dickel was born in Michelbach on May 22, 1854, the son of Eudorf's teacher Philipp Dickel. His father introduced him to beekeeping at an early age . In 1869 his father emigrated to the USA with his older brother Rudolf . Ferdinand followed in his father's footsteps, continued beekeeping and initially became a teacher in Schotten . On January 22, 1879 he became a teacher at the elementary school in Darmstadt . He became known in his environment as a very good and successful observer of bee colonies . The experience he gained with the bee colonies led him to act as an opponent of parthenogenesis and to write his own theory on gender formation. Since his critics rejected his theory because of his non-academic career, and also to have a better basis for his research work, he later studied zoology and chemistry .

In 1879 he married his wife of German descent, who was born in the USA and had two children with her. His son Otto Dickel also dealt scientifically with bee colonies.

In 1897 Ferdinand Dickel took over the editorial office of the bee newspaper in Nördlingen and was able to increase the number of subscribers considerably within a short period of time. After the end of the bee newspaper , he continued to work on the Hessian bee for years.

Ferdinand Dickel retired as a teacher in Darmstadt on March 5, 1910 at his own request.
