Ferenc Lohr (sound engineer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ferenc Lohr , in Germany also Franz Lohr (born December 17, 1904 in Budapest , Austria-Hungary ; † April 26, 1994 ibid) was a Hungarian sound engineer who was the most important representative of his field in Hungarian film until his retirement in 1967.

Live and act

Lohr was very interested in artistic matters through his father of the same name (1871-1946), a versatile artist who had distinguished himself above all as a church painter, and received violin lessons at an early age. With this skill, Lohr junior accompanied silent film screenings at university cinemas back in the 1920s. After studying mechanical engineering, which he completed in 1927, Ferenc Lohr initially had problems finding work in his engineering profession. One day he met a Siemens representative in Hungary at a wedding party and they both started talking. The Siemens man recommended Lohr to the then powerful Budapest production company Hunnia-Film in order to acquire a basic knowledge of Siemens audio equipment. The Siemens agency there, in turn, later sent Lohr to Berlin, where he trained as a sound engineer in sound film with the German film company Tobis-Tonbild-Syndikat .

Back at home in Hungary, Ferenc Lohr took up his work at the newly established domestic sound film in 1931 and was probably the most frequently used sound engineer in the following decades. He was involved in up to a dozen films a year in the following years. In the 1930s in particular, Lohr also worked on numerous co-productions with Austrian and German film companies that made their films in studios in Budapest. This included productions with Jewish artists ostracized in Germany since 1933, for example, end bad, all good , Peter , Ball im Savoy and Mircha . Lohr remained active in the film industry until 1944, shortly before the end of the war, before the subsequent turmoil during the transition from fascism to communism and his being put off by the communist leadership due to his intensive work under Admiral Horthy's regime forced him to remain inactive for a decade. In 1952 Lohr was rehabilitated, and two years later he was able to continue his work as a sound engineer for the Hungarian post-war film. Initially, however, he had to be content with sound work on short documentaries. Ferenc Lohr was imprisoned for several days during the Hungarian uprising in 1956 .
