The Feriye Palace ( Turkish Feriye Sarayı ) is a former Ottoman palace complex on the European west coast of the Bosphorus in Istanbul . The buildings are currently being used by the Galatasaray University .

history

The palace complex was commissioned by Sultan Abdülaziz in 1871 and built by the court architect Sarkis Balyan . The buildings were intended to serve as a residence for the numerous members of the sultan's family. The palace was built in addition to the Dolmabahçe Palace and the Çırağan Palace and was given the Ottoman name Feriye Sarayı , which means second or secondary palace. The complex consists of three main buildings on the waterfront, a wing for the concubines , a small two-storey structure and several ancillary buildings on the back.

On May 30, 1876, Sultan Abdülaziz was forced to abdicate by his ministers. After being deposed, he lived in Topkapı Palace for four days and then moved to Feriye Palace at his own request. A short time later there was murder. After the abolition of the Sultanate and the Caliphate, several members of the Ottoman court lived in the palace until March 3, 1924. The buildings were empty after the expulsion of the last Caliph Abdülmecid II and his court.

In 1927, the Denizcilik Yüksek Okulu , a naval cadet school, was housed in some palace buildings . In the school year 1928/29 the Kabataş boys' grammar school was also housed here. After co-education began in Turkey, in 1967 the girls' classes from Galatasaray-Lisesi were also accommodated here. Parts of the palace in the northeast remained empty for many years.

The naval school became the Faculty of Maritime of the İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi in 1981 and moved to the Istanbul district of Tuzla . Large parts of the palace complex were again empty until 1982 when the Ziya Kalkavan Maritime Vocational School moved in.

The buildings that were used by the girls of Galatasaray Lisesi were given the Galatasaray Universitesi in 1992 . The main building is used by the Faculties of Law, Economics and Communication as well as the administration. This building was originally called İbrahim Tevfik Efendi Sahil Sarayı . In 1995 the vacant part of the building was renovated by the Kabataş Education Foundation and converted into the exclusive Feriye Lokantası restaurant .

The main building used by Galatasaray University was badly damaged in a fire on January 22, 2013. The Turkish Ministry of Culture renovated the building in the following years. Today faculties of Galatasaray University are housed here again.
