Fernand Lematte

Fernand Lematte (born July 26, 1850 in Saint-Quentin , † 1929 ), full name Jacques François Fernand Lematte was a French history and portrait painter . His work is partly to be assigned to orientalism .

He entered Alexandre Cabanel's class at the Paris École des Beaux-Arts in 1866 and, with the death of Messalina in 1870, he won the Grand Prix de Rome associated with a scholarship and a stay in Rome . During his four-year stay in Italy, he witnessed the eruption of Vesuvius in 1872 , which inspired him to pray to St. Januarius . Later he was commissioned to decorate the mayor's office in the 13th arrondissement in Paris ( The Family ).

He has received several awards and medals throughout his career.

The paintings sent in by Fernand Lematte from Rome for the annual Paris Salon, which takes place in the Palais des Champs-Elysées, were viewed as somewhat cold and academic, but praised as beautifully composed and correctly drawn.
