Fernand Pelez , actually Ferdinand Emmanuel Pelez de Cordova , (born January 18, 1848 in Paris , † August 7, 1913 there ) was a French painter of Spanish origin.

Life

Pelez came from a family of artists. His grandfather came from Spain and settled in Paris as a painter. His father, Fernand Pelez the Elder (1820–1899), worked as a painter and his uncle Raymond Pelez (1815–1874) as a draftsman and illustrator. The painter Chalumeau (actually Raymond Pelez, 1838-1894) was his older brother.

Pelez received his first artistic lessons from his father and with his support he later became a student of Alexandre Cabanel at the École des Beaux-Arts . After some initial successes, Pelez's artistic work turned into a financial disaster around 1880 because he could no longer sell anything.

With the help of his teachers - above all Alexandre Cabanel - Pelez was able to take part in the large annual exhibition of the Salon de Paris in 1896 . He exhibited his picture L'Humanité , which was not recognized by the jury or the public. Disappointed, Pelez withdrew almost completely. He continued to paint, but strictly refused to exhibit or sell his paintings.

Fernand Pelez died forgotten on August 7, 1913, at the age of seventy, in Paris, where he found his final resting place.

reception

Pelez was not long in the shadow of his teacher Alexandre Cabanel. His work was dedicated to realism . Almost a hundred years later, Pelez was rediscovered. In the Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris , he was devoted 2009/2010 with great success a major retrospective.
