Fernando Flávio Marques de Almeida (born February 18, 1916 in Rio de Janeiro , † August 2, 2013 in São Paulo ) was a Brazilian geologist .

Life

In 1938 he received his diploma as civil engineer at the Polytechnic in São Paulo, but turned to geology under the influence of the geology professor Luiz Flores de Moraes Rego and became his assistant at the Polytechnic (Escola Politécnica da Universidade de São Paulo, EPUSP). In 1957 he won the competition for a lectureship at EPUSP with a thesis on geology by Fernando de Noronha and after another competition (in which he wrote a thesis on Trinidad ) he took over the chair in 1962. Until 1969 he also carried out research for the Departamento Nacional da Produção Mineral. From 1974 he was at the University of São Paulo and from 1978 at the Institute for Technology Research of the State of São Paulo. In 1994 he retired.

He was considered one of the leading explorers of the geology of Brazil. He wrote 176 scientific articles and book chapters.

In 1995 he received the Grand Cross of the Brazilian Order of Merit for Science. He was a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. In 1991 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Campinas (where he taught from 1985 to 1990). The mineral Almeidaíta from Novo Horizonte was named after him in 2013.
