Fernando Zúñiga

Fernando Zúñiga (* 1968 in Santiago de Chile ) is a Swiss linguist of Chilean origin.

Life

After studying economics from 1987 to 1991 in Santiago de Chile , he worked for Swiss Re from 1992 to 1994 . Zúñiga then studied general linguistics , English linguistics and English literature at the University of Zurich ; he graduated in 1999 with a licentiate and obtained his doctorate in 2002.

From 2002 to 2003 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Linguistics at the University of Leipzig , and in 2004 he was a visiting scholar in Manchester (England), Melbourne (Australia) and Eugene (Oregon, USA). From 2005 to 2006 he was a researcher at the Centro de Estudios Públicos in Santiago de Chile, and from the end of 2006 to January 2012 he was senior assistant at the Department of General Linguistics at the University of Zurich, where he completed his habilitation in 2011.

From February 2012 to January 2013, Zúñiga was an SNSF professor at the University of Zurich. Since February 2013 he has held the chair for general linguistics at the Institute of Linguistics at the University of Bern .

His areas of specialization are language typology and indigenous languages ​​of North and South America, especially the Mapudungun and Algonquin languages .

In 2018 Zúñiga was elected to the Academia Europaea .
