Fes-Dur is a key of the musical scale major based on the fundamental building Fes. The key Fes-Dur is in the notation with eight ♭ written (b, it, as, the, ges, ces, fes, heses), the eighth ♭ is as listed before H. The corresponding scale and the basic chord of this key (the tonic fes-as-ces) are also referred to by the term Fes major.
Because of the eight signs Fes-Dur is uncommon and is enharmonically mostly in E major reinterpreted, even though they would resort to different string instruments as E major.
In some marching bands (especially in the old federal states), Fez major alto flutes are used, in tune with soprano and tenor flutes in C flat major. Beyond that there are no instruments in Fez, and only one work that is written in Fes major with the correct preliminary drawing, namely the third movement of Viktor Ewald's Wind Quintet No. 4 Op. 8th.
