Leonhard Castle
The Leonhardische Schloss (also New Palace ) is a modern palace complex in Groß-Karben , town of Karben in the Wetterau district in Hesse .
history
Presumably, a medieval castle complex , the ancestral seat of the Lords of Karben, was located on the site of today's castle . These were wealthy in the Wetterau and had extensive relatives. From the family came among other things a Reichsschultheiß of the city of Frankfurt am Main and burgraves of the Reichsburg Friedberg . Karben himself belonged to the Burggrafschaft Friedberg with the free court Kaichen at least since 1475 .
There are no written sources on the castle complex. The earliest evidence is a coat of arms stone in the courtyard wall with the coat of arms of the Lords of Kronberg and the dates 1614 and 1618 as well as a building inscription by Friedberg Burgrave Johann Eberhardt von Kronberg and his wife Anna, née Riedesel zu Eisenbach .
Soon afterwards there were frequent changes of ownership. By inheritance, the farm first went to the Brömser von Rüdesheim and then to the Counts of Metternich . From 1691 it belonged to the barons of Edelsheim , who rebuilt the manor house. It was acquired by Johann Peter Leonhardi in 1790 . Since 1886, his family also owned the upper castle in the neighboring village of Heldenbergen. The Leonhard Castle is now privately owned.
investment
The mansion was built in 1695. In 1804 a dwelling was added on the courtyard side . Towards the street, it is dominated by the neo-Gothic applications from the 19th century. Since then, the house has had diagonal bay windows on the corners, crenellated walls and the bell tower.
In the courtyard itself there is a Renaissance fountain with the Kronberg-Riedesel double coat of arms, behind it a neo-Gothic house built in the chapel style, which was built in the mid-19th century. The so-called manor house is located parallel to the manor house. It is a partially plastered half-timbered building from the late 18th or early 19th century, but which is said to contain a late medieval core. Further north there is a larger farm yard within the surrounding wall, which also includes a 19th century forge. There is a small garden in the southwest corner. Together with the park to the west, the castle is a very clear and functional example of a rural aristocratic residence in modern times.
