Moritzstein Castle

The Burg Moritz stone , formerly Ysenburg Birsteiner-yard is a partially preserved Burg (residues of the former lock Moritz stone ) in the district Wenings town Gedern in Wetterau in Hesse .

history

Moritzstein Castle used to be the main part of the Ysenburg fortress town and for centuries it was the summer residence of the Counts of Isenburg-Birstein . It was built in the 18th century by Count Moritz von Ysenburg and Birstein. At that time it was built over the entire length of today's Amthofstrasse and called Moritzstein Castle . In 1811 the partly ruined castle was sold to several farming families. The buildings were demolished and new riding stables were built in their place . The coat of arms stone of the former main portal of the castle is still preserved and built into the cellar wall of the Böck house . Only the Burgmannenhaus remained , which is now known for short as the "Moritzstein" or "Burg Moritzstein". Of the actual castle, only the gatehouse and a wall (integrated into a stable building) remain.

Todays use

The building's coat of arms hall now serves as a meeting room for the local council and is used for cultural events. The ground floor is home to the Wenings local history museum with mostly historical farm work and everyday objects.
